Default STI 7/8 intercooler on 99/00

Can a STI7/8 intercooler be made to fit a MY99/00 (STI5/6)?
Is it a straight swap or is some cutting & messing around involved?
I remember reading about this somewhere, but can't find it anymore. I have the impression that there was a thread in the DIY forum..?

Yeah, it can be done. Tricky to fit, especially if you have a strutbrace, but it does go in.

You'll need to make some brackets, or ideally, nab the STi ones at the same time as the I/C. Also need to modify the scoop liner. Not sure how close the fluid reservoirs will be on RHD cars, may be some work necessary there.

Also looking at the possibilty of doing this before having a remap.
Anybody got any quantative (before and after) results of doing this swap on a MY99/00 car?
People have said that the V5 sti intercooler is slightly different and has a slightly lower pressure drop accross it compared to UK turbo intercooler, is the V7/8 unit even better or of different construction?

my car is LHD, does that mean it will be easier? Or shall I just go for a STI 5/6 intercooler, as a brand new STI 6 i/c assembly costs about 51000 yen in Japan, equals about 260 pounds or 380 euro.

On the quote it said "assembly" and I'm not sure if it comes with the Y-piece or if it's just the i/c core??

Yes Alberick, it's easier with an LHD car due to the pedal box (obviously) being over the other side. Less chance of heating the brake/clutch cylinders and fluid reservoirs too.

Dan, the V5/6 STi I/C does flow a fraction better than the standard one, but the new age STi intercooler is something like 25% bigger. Obviously the STi5/6 part is a straight swap, but it's worth the hassle fitting the new age one in.

No quantitive results unfortunately as I didn't have a "before" set of figures to compare with, but if you don't want to go as far as an FMIC, the new STi one is a viable (and cost effective if you get one from a breakers) alternative to products like the APS.

Thanks for that info GM, the FMIC is out of the question!
Do you know what bits of the scoop and undertray would need to be changed for the new larger IC to seal in properly?
Wouldn't have thought that the STI V7/8 undertray would have fit onto a classic dut to that HUGE new scoop.
Any ideas, im all ears.

STi7 and 8 have the small scoops. STi9 and 10 have the biggun. Either way though, the new shape trays won't fit the classic shape bonnet.

You can cut the old one out, redrill the holes for the sealing rubber and relocate it. You'll need to get another sealing rubber from a scrappie if you want it to go all the way round.

Ahhhh, i sense the big bodging tool coming out for this one!

I'm gonna be doing this aswell, I've also managed to get the brackets, clutch fluid reservoir, bracket and extension pipe of the sti7 so hopefully this will make it a bit easier. Been thinking about the shrouding for the scoop myself. Should be fun but I have got quite a few "persuasion" tools!
