Can someone please explain this knocklink activity
Right. Fitted my Knocklink today.
MY 94 WRX, full decat, Scooby ECU.
ECU has been reset due to battery disconnect. Knocklink set to max sensitivity.
Took car for a spin, warmed it up properly and gave it some aggro. 1st and 2nd gear, getting green lights one and two. 3rd and 4th getting a brief flash of amber and red lights at the top end of rev range WOT. This seems to be mostly as I am releasing the throttle to change gear.
Is this very bad and if I presume this has been happening since I have owned the car(18 months) is there likely to be much internal damage?
Am I supposed to have the Knocklink set to max sensitivity?
As I have just reset the ECU. Is it likely that it will correct any knock in the next few days?
Thanks
Mike

if the lights are progressive you're ok, they're picking up an increase in engine noise as the revs rise.
what you're looking for is any 'spikes', eg from two green to big red immediately.
I suspect you may be picking up the sound from the dump valve or induction when you change gear m8.
If in doubt, get it checked on a RR. I'm sure that there are many scoobynetters who can offer more advice than me, but I hope this is helpful.

I was always advised to have it 1 click off max. Im not sure about the picking up noise from the DV etc, the Kl is designed to listen for a high frequency noise in Hz, so it wont misinterpret other frequencies.

DV?
IF its the electro systems KL then i have mine on max and so do every1 else ive spoken 2.....my96 wrx will light up 1st and 2nd green through the gears ...however u say it knocks as u let off WOT...do u have an aftermarket dump valve? if so it might be sticking open after the vent ...i had the same problem [admitedly only in 2nd gear]where it was sticking open and causing the engine 2 knock[dont know the technical reasons why?]but i took it apart and relubricated it[forge vent 2 atmos]and its been fine ever since.

I tend to trust Bob Rawle who is a great tuner for scoobs and also supplies Knocklink. He recommends fitting the sensor on the block under the intercooler and the sensitivity set on max, i.e. if you don't have access to det cans to calibrate it differently.

George.

Cheers for replies. I have a standard dv so unlikely to be that. Going for a long run in it today so i'll see how I get on. Will no doubt be posting again tonight.
Thanks again

Well took it out for a blast today and i'm definately getting amber flashes at 4000rpm in 3rd and a red flash at 5000 in 4th, then back to greens before gear change. I may be wrong but i'm sure there is an audible, single tap coinciding with the red flash in 4th.
Is this as bad as I fear? What do I do now?
Thanks again

Thats about the RPM you will "normally" hear det. I get the 1st green light go bright at that sort of RPM, then it goes away.
Might be worth lifting the bonnet and revving it using the throttle body, and have a listen. Also tap the KL sensor gently with a screwdriver to see if it is working properly.
Did you try turning it down a notch?

No,. I left it on max as I thought that was the thing to do. Basically the first green light is dimly lit with just the ignition on, engine off. Then get bright greens as soon as it hits hard boost in any gear. Then the christmas lights flash as explained above in 3rd and 4th. The lights only come on very briefly, but it's got me kinda worried as it's probably been doing this since I bought the car 18 months ago. Am I just being paranoid or is this going to kill my car unless I get it remapped or tuned?
Thanks again

Mike,
Ill stick to answering on 22B, but basically you need to do something quick from what you've said.

Oz,
Do you use octane booster?
If not, I would seriously consider it.
That sounds very much like the knocklink is picking up det to me.
You don't necessarily need to remap, although that would be the best solution.
First make sure the car is fuelling adequately. Make sure you are doing all you can to cool the inlet charge. Make sure you are using the highest octane possible and make sure your plugs are the correct ones ie might need to be a bit colder.
