Hi all
Yesterday my MY00 (61k miles) officially announced to the world that it's become middle-aged, by developing its first proper fault
The symptom is a loud tapping noise, coming from the corner of the engine near #4 piston. I'm not at all familiar with the layout of the engine bay, but there's a silver cylindrical thing mounted in that corner - I'm guessing it's the starter? - which could well be the source of the noise.
The car starts first time as always and drives fine, but I want to get the noise fixed asap - from inside the car it sounds like a diesel.
Any suggestions on what it might be, what it might cost to fix, and how easy a DIY job? (I have a garage and a good set of tools, but in the absence of a Haynes manual I'm nervous!)
