Question Air/Fuel ratio controllers!

Just wondering what's best way of monitoring and adjusting the Air/Fuel ratio.

Was looking at the Apexi Super S-AFC-2, also the HKS Super AFR. Anyone have one of these things on their Scooby, just want to know how easy they are to use and install.

Also if there is any other AFR device's you can recomend.

I have the HKS AFR device and its very simple to install but not exactly for the faint of hearted you need to splice into the oxygen (IIRC) sensor lead that feeds into the ECU, thumbs up from me

Cool

Cheers willgill, still not to sure what one to go for, I think that the HKS S-AFR will be the easier to install, the Apexi S-AFC-2 seems a bit more invloved in getting it set up.

Anyone else with any info on these controllers, would be much appreciated

Cheers SBTR.

At least some of the "HKS AFR" products are single channel and not ideal for tuning unless you have made a change that causes a unilateral alteration in fuelling.

Note that manipulating MAF voltages does not only alter the AFR but also the ignition timing.

If you must do it, the S-AFC 2 is about as good as it gets as it is RPM and probably load aware in its alterations, as well as having knock monitoring.

But try advancing the timing and richening the fuelling and you are in trouble.

Try fitting big injectors and then sorting the large timing shifts and you are again in trouble.

Except for minor tweakage, get a mappable ECU or map the original ECU.

The only reliable way to monitor AFR is with a wideband O2 sensor, and the AFR units mentioned do not have this facility. So you are adjusting in the dark. A narrowband voltage on one car that is rich can cause another to overheat and melt.

Its pretty pointless fitting one and trying to set it up yourself based on an AFR display.

Why do you want one?

Best setup on a rolling road, but as John say's, you're much better off re-mapping th ECU.

Even set up on a rolling road can be dubious. Realistic airflow and load can be tricky, ignition maps can be dismal with inadequate cooling and excessive load.

Cheers, I think a re-map will be the best option, except I don't know anyone that does re-maps.

Also thinking about changing the turbo, so I suppose a re-map is innevitable.

John, do you know anyone in my area who knows there stuff when it comes to re-mapping ECU's, if so drop me an e-mail. It would be handy if it was within a 30 mile radius of Edinburgh

Cheers SBTR
