Question

Someone posted up a suggestion on my site about curing problems with lack of power at low revs by moving the OE knock sensor to a different location, then unplugging the battery for 20 mins to reset the ECU. They say there was too much vibration in the OE location, which is cured by moving it slightly higher up. With me having next to no knowledge of how knock sensors work, just got a few questions before I try it:

Bearing in mind this is for N/A Sports, not turbos, the suggestion was to move the sensor as per this pic:

1) Is it safe to do this? (ie will the sensor still work in the new location, or will it just appear to run better as sensor's not giving any warnings in the new location)
2) Would the "fix" from this potentially be due to the ECU reset rather than the move itself?

I'm currently having problems with lack of power (feels like a misfire) below about 3500 revs, which I think may be due to my MAF being clogged by a Pipercross induction kit (which I've now taken off), but don't wanna shell out £250 on a new MAF if it could actually be the knock sensor causing it, and moving it could safely cure it for no expense.

Ta,

Mike

£250 for a MAF? Or does that include labour? The raw sensor (minus housing) is <£90 ISTR.

Have a play with search, though searching for MAF will yield trillions of results unfortunately....

Mine is apparently of the age where you can only get the MAF in the housing block as it's fixed to it

What year? Pre MY97 MAFs (hot wire ones) can be cleaned carefully with spray brake (or carb) cleaner. Just be careful not to brake the wire by spraying the cleaner directly at it.

Just to clarify things a little bit further.

Its my car the pic is from. A friend at work went to Subaru in Croydon to pick up a Legacy and had a word with the lads in the workshop. Its was them that said to move knock sensor to its new location. They said its not an offical cure but they have done this in the past and haven't had any problems with doing so.

Anyone on here use the dealer in question??

dnb - it's a 1998 car. Not entirely sure on the MY as it was registered in July of 1998, but it's one of the first cars with the new interior.
Engine bay looks like this (not my car, but same layout):

An old thread here, but has anyone got anymore info on this now? looks to be a good move if the engine is a bit noisy! (thus triggering knock sensor)
