I have removed my aircon from my MY97 UK wagon a few months ago.

Now experiencing heater going cold when car is slowing down or stationary.

Any ideas?

I do have a leaking radiator that is soon to be replaced. Could this be the source of my chilly problem?

Could be.

Rocker gasket has slight drip onto up pipe. All gaskets will be getting replaced soon when I lift manifold and port headers.

Will keep an eye on it.

I thought when this happened it was something to do with a knackered thermostat, but I am probably totally wrong!!

Check the amount of water in the engine.. check the header tank on top left of the engine.. (when cold) should be about 2cms from the top of the neck.

Sounds like you have air in the heater matrix hence cold which is a first sign of low on water.. I'd check for a water leak..
could be head gasket but more likely rad leak.
