I've just got an oil filter for a MY99 from my dealer and it's smaller in diameter that the old one, they've assured me it's the right one.
Anyone else noticed this?

Yep, been told that they've changed them all to this new "smaller" style.....

Supposedly, they're the one's used on STi engines and are better ??

Anyone else ??

Wink

That's true they are smaller & the older larger ones have of course been used up.

I have still got one though I have placed that in our "historic" museum.....people have still offered to buy it though...

The change in design was necessary for the cars with equal-length exhaust manifolds, which means the Japanese spec Impreza STi's, and all the new turbocharged Legacys, and probably all turbocharged Imprezas at some point in the future.

As to whether it's a "better" design of filter than the old one, well, the area of the filter element itself is smaller, which theoretically isn't quite such a good thing. If you're changing it at the correct intervals though, these filters will still be more than up to the job.
