Some people have just colour coded the sidelights and rely on the morettes for all the lighting. Other's just fit some better bulbs to match.

First thing I'd do is check the voltage on the bulb. Meter the battery to alternator voltage, then battery to bulb.

I get 14.23v at the alternator, but only 10.3v at the bulbs They're design to work off 12v, so that could be the first thing to sort.

If you don't have a large voltage drop, then you could look at fitting some uprated bulbs. The PIAA's are very good, but hugely expensive (£30+ per bulb ).

I run some Philips VisionPlus headlight bulbs and their Blue Vision sidelights. Better than OE, but certainly no where near proper/safe lighting.

Other than morettes, you'd need to consider HID but at £400+ it's pretty expensive.

I have a 94 import and my lights are great, I haven't checked what bulbs I am using, but just to let you know if you get the right bulbs, and sort the wiring the lights themselfs are fine. Fitting relays is good, did this on a previous car and removed the spots as standard lights with 100/80s were perfect.

I had the same problem with my MY98 wagon.

S**te night-time vision!!!

From some info I got on Scoobynet I learnt that Osram or Phillips Vision are the best for the scoobies.

I got a set of Osram's from www.powerbulbs.com
Ordered Wednesday lunch time arrived friday morning, in the car for Friday lunch-time.
Free P&P and a free set of Phillips Blue Vision sidelights all for £19.95

Very very pleased with the results

Tony

I had the same problem until a friend mentioned getting the beams aligned to their optimum setting. So I took the car to a friendly mot centre and they were kind enough to let me use their equipment. I thought they were aligned ok before I did it, but I has no idea just how far out they were. Now, I very seldom use main beam because the dip is so good. You should give this a go first, before you start spending silly money on new lighting.

(Philips Vision plus bulbs)

Got some Phillips Blue Vision Plus (or could have been Ultra?) from www.powerbulbs.com and got a free set of Blue Vision sidelight bulbs - all for approx £22.

Huge difference, the light isn't too 'boy racer' blue - more white like an artists daylight bulb produces. Big improvement over the OE bulbs anyway...

David - Leeds area-ish without being too specific...

Do you recognise where the piccies are taken - it's near the M1 at Kirkhamgate - one of the few dark bits with a longish stretch...

Done lots of bulb testing including two sets of expensive PIAA of differing types, uprating the wiring and fitting a relay to allow for 130/90W (illegal for road use) Osram +50% and Philips but the best is General Electric + 60% which I got in the post next day from Andy Batters at Macs Garage, Ilkley. Change out of 320. They also do very bright side light bulbs.

There is a Philips screw securing a clip at the top above the headlight at the split between head and sidelights. Then slide the sidelight unit forward and it will pop out of its knuckle fixing. Some force is required and to refit it needs a sharp thump with your palm or similar.
