Question

Hi Scoob Nuts,

Just wanted to know if anyone has had a wheel bearing fail on their car and the symptoms that they got. It would be good if the bearing in question was on the rear.

jack the car up if you get play when you have your hands either top and bottom of left and right then its probably fooked..

push / pull with left and pull / push with right if you see what I mean..

sound?

annoying rumbling droning sound..

Cant remember what type of bearing is on the rear, but if your not a competant mechanic.. then I suggest you dont attempt it.. as you will probably have to strip the handbrake from within the centre of the rear disk.

As David mentions in will "drone" when under load. It's not an easy job to do, if it's the rear then ensure that you get a speedi sleeve (From Subaru) fitted at the same, otherwise you'll soon be getting them fitted again.

Thx guys,

The Cars under warranty, so no probs there.

I get the droneing/whineing, especially when loaded or => 70mph also get a bit of losseness feel especially when braking on bumps and also get a grind/clicking when braking at slow speed. Im presuming its the back cos it sounds behind me and i cant feel it though the steering.

I had the tyres changed at the dealers (would be nice if they'ed balanced them) and they say the sound was my old tyres, but the new goodyears are less noisy on the road making the drone/grind much clearer!. Grrrr

Already jacked the car up and i cant get any movement.

When I had one go (on an Escort) the symptoms I had were rear end loose on right hand corners, did not hear a noise. When I stopped can jacked car up the left hand rear wheel all but fell off, apparently the main retaining nut had come free and was 1 thread away from coming off!!!

Simon did you have the handbrake released when testing the wheels for play? I think having it applied will stop the disc/wheel assembly moving (or maybe I have that wrong?)
