I currently have a MY00 Uk spec turbo with
decat exhaust, Boost controller and Super AFC.
I am looking to upgrade the intercooler for something larger, but don't want to go down the road of fitting a FMIC.
Is a TMIC from a later model (eg. STI)any larger?
and will it fit?

Any help will be much appreciated!

I'm not sure about STI-spec Imprezas, but I think they're no larger than WRX/Turbo top-mounts. APS do a large aftermarket top-mount intercooler, as do MRT.

I have an APS top mount, tight fit but well worth it, it's over double the depth of the OEM, it is bar and plate though which is probably un-nesicarry for a TMIC.

I beleve the STI ones are larger (not definate), they'd have to be given the charge temps even on a uk car

The STI 5/6 IC's are slightly bigger than the old WRX 'Slanted' IC's.

I have done the STI 5/6 IC conversion on my93 WRX and it defo makes a diffrence...

Thumbs up

i am sure the my01 wrx intercooler fits the my96-my00 cars but haven't atempted it myself, its a lot bigger than the one you have now and you should be able to pick one up for around £100.
a worthwhile mod for the money

I'm using a WRX 01 TMIC on my 94 WRX. Not an easy job to fit and I wish I'd jumped straight to a FMIC now.
You need to make up an inlet hose and the intercooler just touches the bulkhead, even after seam welding it. If your interested when my FMIC fitted I'll sell it. I could also send some pics for you.

When I bought the WRX intercooler Ed had an APS fitted, it was massive. If you e-mail him I'm sure he'd give you helpful advice.

I have also done this conversion on my MY95 WRX by using a MY02 WRX TMIC. Luckily I bought it with a Prodrive silicon Y piece so I modified this by adding an alloy T-piece to enable me to fit my dump valve. I also gained clearence from the bulk head by flattening the lip on it and fromthe front by grinding some off of the the oe dumpvalve mounting point.
The hardest bit I found was getting it level which I managed to sort out with a couple of new brackets and modifications to the origanal mount which attaches to the gearbox.
