For posting here, but there may be someone who can help.

The rev-counter on my betterhalves Peugeot 306 TD works on and off, sometimes it will, sometimes it wont. Sometimes it bounces about as though it is getting its power on and off.

Its not a cable driven rev-counter, so what powers it?

What could it be?

Please help. She is now using the rev limiter for an indication as to when to change gear. She also turns the ignition on when the engine is running, she NEEDS the rev-counter........HELP

Question

Dunno about the pug but these are normally driven electrically. You checked the famously great french wiring at the back of the tacho hasn't come loose?

will almost certainly take its signal from the ECU, however it is unlikely this is the cause, more likely is the tachometer unit its self, try connecting a multimeter to the back of the tach(may have to partially dismantle cluster) if you have a voltage which varys with engine speed here it must be the tach, if you dont however, identify the tach signal pin in the ECU and check for signal voltage here. This should locate the problem. In my experience it is most likely a dry soldered joint on the tach itself.

Hope this helps, Gareth.

A lot of diesels take their rev feed from the alternator.
