Hi all
Just done a 500 mile round trip in my 96GT-V Wagon. What a car, and not toooooo bad on the juice if your carefull. It's just knowing that power is there should you need/want it - and as I'm new to it - I wanted it lots!!!

Anyway, I have just picked up 2 off 5Ltr tubs of Halfords fully synth 5W/40 for £30 the pair (heavily discounted at the mo!) Is the Oil filter and sump washer the same on the twin turbo engines as the UK 2ltr engines? Most Subes in the UK use the same ones, but does it fit (and will it be good enough for ours?

Cheers

Huw,

Std uk turbo filter, plus sump ring will be fine.

The dealers now supply the micro filter to all models.

The oil is a bit on the thin side though, 10/40w is best for TTs

Thanks Mark. I will pick one up.

The way I understand the oil issue, is that the lower the first number, the better that oil is at getting around the engine at startup and offering better initial protection. Also, take 32 from 5 and you get -27 which equates to the lowest temp (in degrees celsius) that the oil is good for. Likewise, 40 degC is the upper ambient temp the oil can work in - beyond that it will gunk up! I believe that any oil will work equal to other grades (as long as they are the same classification - fully synth, etc)once they are in the same ambient range.

With the TT having a turbo that kicks in at 2100rpm, I thought it best to start protecting it asap 'cos it is really hard not to wind it up when the engine is cold.

Oils are confusing(to me anyway)when you get into the specifics, but please correct me if I am wrong as I don't want to compromise my engine for the sake of a few quid.
Cheers.

Huw,

It's not just operating temps.

Go to thin, and things get all rattley, to thick and the turbo's have to work harder (when cold).

Yes the primary spools from 2k, but it's a light blow, only about 150bhp.

A 10w oil is within spec for UK winters, if your doing track days, 10/60w would be better as an all round oil.

The southern hemi boys tend to have trouble with 15/?w oils.

As I said 5w a bit thin, though I can't see it will cause any damage, just allow the engine to be up to temp, before letting loose the secondary

I personally use 10/40 semi-synth, changing at 3k intervals.

HTH

Mark

Cheers for that Mark.
I have bought the oil now so I will use it, but I will keep an eye on things and switch to thicker if it's not 100% ok.
Cheers
