Question

Hi,
I am new to this forum and not very mechanicaly minded.
I am looking to upgrade the performance of my 98 2000 turbo est.
I also don't want to interfere with the reliability of the car.
I have been reading about ECUs and it seems you can only upgrade or remap the original ECU on the new style of Impreza, is this the case?
I would be looking at spending 2K on it, any sugestions.
Cheers

Hi mate, Full decat and a Power Engineering 'phase 1' remap will see you to about 270-280bhp and come well within your 2k budget. You'll probably want to get some Samco intercooler hoses aswell, and really some bigger brakes.

Hi Drexel,
thanks for the advice.
Which exhaust would you recomend, I don't want anything too loud at low revs.
Would I need a knock link if I was to get a remap.
Have you had any dealings with Power engineering, is the remap reliable?

Cheers,
justin

A nice exhaust that isn't too loud but gives a nice burble is a Magnex system.

Yes a Knocklink is definately recommended for any mods, I currently run an MY97 (Same ECU as yours) With a Full decat, K&N Induction kit, Forge VTA Dumpvalve, Samco hoses and a Dawes boost controller set to 1.2bar midrange dropping to 1bar at the top, I'm pushing around 260bhp at the moment and my Knocklink stays quiet, but it's worth having one just incase. I'm also running some lovely big Brembo brakes as the standard 2-pots are just not up to the job.

Power Engineering has quite a good reputation, I have my car booked in for a remap in March, there's a group-buy going on at the moment giving you a substantial saving, give me a minute and I'll put a link up to the group-buy thread.

I've fixed the link now. The group buy is for a Remap of the ECU, on 97/98 cars Power Engineering solder a board into your ECU then remap it to give you a nice power and torque increase all through the rev-range. Ideally you would want to get the Remap in conjunction with a decat exhaust.
