recently been noticing a few things on my 93wrx even though it is running fine.
1) louder whistling noise when above 0.5 bar boost.
2) cloud of smoke out of the exhaust when i initially floor it.
3) sometimes burning oil smell especially when the heater is on.
4) oil level goes down (not at an alarming rate though)
it sounds to me like my turbo may be on the way out. i am hoping its this and not a prob with my engine.
does this sound right to anyone else as i don't want to replace it and find out it was something else.
thanks - matt

When it's been ticking over for a while, and then you set off does it smoke then? My old montego turbo had those symptoms and it was the turbo. Only cost £200 to fix.

Matt,
when mine went, it was ok on throttle and only did it when it was left to idle. typically this was when i stopped in traffic and when i stopped & parked up
smoke was werid - white / blue, but not combusted engine oil, just burn .. which is hard to discribe.
id get all normal things done, like compression test, check oil /water etc etc before you go down replacing the turbo.
you're not having alot of luck lately, are you mate!

Well WRXMATT,I had the same prob as you ,,,there a few things to try,,
step 1,,take off your intercooler and have a look in side it ,if there is alot of oil in it well then its the turbo,
step 2,,take out your lamba s. if it is wet with oil its valve seals,
step 3,,undo your oil filler cap and put your hand on the filler pipe, there should be a small bit of suction ,if trys to blow your hand off,its rings,
the only reason i know this,I had the same problem with my 97wagon,rang a man that builds rally engines, step 1 found the problem,Turbo, great chance to up grade your turbo now,i put mine in yesterday,[ IHI VF 23.]and no smoke, dont forget to give the intercooler and pipes a good wash out and clean, otherwise when you put on a new turbo it will smoke for a while after,
Best of luck, and let us know how you get on,
