It is mounted in the back edge of the water pipe which runs diagonally across the top of the engine. If you stand by the drivers side wing/front wheel [with bonnet open]lean over and look down over the back of the inlet manifold and below it,you will see two sensors in the water pipe, one with a single connector is for the temp gauge, the other [brown plug] has two wires as is the one you are chasing!
It is a bit "tight" down there as it is packed between the turbo piping and the main inlet for the inlet manifold, but if engine not too warm, can be reached easily and removed if ness, but watch out you dont loose too much coolant when/if you remove it.

Ok, i may have found it, but not exactly as you describe, i forgot to mention its a MY98. looking in from the front, i see along the front edge of a ridge to the right of the inlet pipe, directly behind the alternator, the left side has a sensor with a single wire connected with a spade clip, and then sensor with a brown connector, i really can barely see its wires with the alternator in the way, this sounds correct?
