Unhappy

Hi,

I am the owner of a 1999 Impreza STI V5.

I've got a problem, and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Car is pretty much standard (Apart from exhaust and eibachs etc).

Problem I have got is that the exhaust (Manufacturer will remain nameless until I sort this out) has ripped the rear left (Passenger) driveshaft rubber boot off (The one that goes in near the rear diff).

So, I put a new boot on and it's happened at least 3 times since, every time I have re-filled the boot with driveshaft grease.

Exhaust now changed to standard bar a scoobysport downpipe and centre section.

The problem I have got now is at low speed an apparent 'clonking' noise is heard, it's quite intermittent and does not happen all of the time, but when it does its noticeable, also you can feel the 'clonking' noise through the seat.

Any ideas?

I think it may be:

a) Eibachs ?
b) Rear Diff ?
c) Drop links ?

Any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance

sounds like your exhaust isnt following the line it should, and is hanging too far towards the passenger side at the rear. As it is still happening this suggests that the downpipe or centre section is out of alignment.

I have seen this on an exhaust before. The cure was to visit my local kwikfit where he heated the exhaust with the oxy/acet and kinked it so that the exhaust lay correctly. Literally took a minute to do, but problem solved.Prior to this exhaust had been clonking on underside of vehicle and jumping off the rear hanger occasionally.

Hope you get it fixed.

Hi Beastie,

Exhaust definetely is not fouling anywhere on the car now with the Scoobysport D/P / Centre and STI BB.

The old exhaust caused many problems.

Took the left rear shock apart this morning and re-seated the Eibach spring, so thats out of the equation as its still knocking......

The thing about exhausts is that they swing about a fair bit when you hit bumps etc more so if they are not in alignment to begin with.
Have you got the correct exhaust mounting rubbers fitted?, check another scooby, and are all the mounting points used?

If all is in order then i would start looking for another cause.

Its ok have sorted it now

It was the rear left shock not being in the right position, so have adjusted how it sits and now it's clearing the chassis correctly, it was slightly rubbing against the car.
