No. The K&N filters are very lightly oiled and are not known for reducing MAF sensor service life. It's the very gunky ITG one that's got a bit of a reputation for doing this.

The K&N filters are excellent replacements, as is the Green. TSL sell a Subaru specific "blue" Green filter which is supposed to be a fraction better than the generic one.

Any advice on the best replacement for the standard paper filter on an MY03 WRX? I've heard that the oil used on K&Ns can contaminate the MAF sensor. Is this true?

Cheers.

And the other question is, will it make any difference? I know they do in a normally aspirated car, but for a turbo? FYI, the cat is a completely standard MY03 WRX (a Joe Numpty mobile! - at least until I can aford a PPP).

We have never managed to reliably measure any power increase with any replacement filter when compared to a new std paper element. And we don't want to see anything but the std filter fitted with a performance package.......

Question

Mike - the word "new" stuck out to me in your reply. Is there anything behind that, or am I just a cynic? I was wondering if the paper filter's performance tails off more wuickly than a replacement such as the Green?
Cheers.

My understanding was also that the K&N filters suffered less from air-flow reduction vs. contamination when compared to a paper filter. Also, what do you mean by:

Mungo

Some of the tests by replacement filter suppliers have shown that their filter's performance drops off more slowly than the std paper equivalent, which of course it will if it's filtering out smaller particles. Whenever anyone fits a replacement element they are generally comparing the performance after to when it was fitted with a used paper element and they would have normally seen the same performance change by fitting a new std filter.
