You will need to get it professionally wired as you have to splice it into the wiring loom via relays because of the bulb failure warning system . I got a local company who specialise in tow bar fitting to do it all .

all uk subarus have a plug to connect to genuine subaru towbars. in imps i think it is located just under the n/s rear lamp cluster accesable from inside. in legs it is tucked up in the jack cubby box right at the top under the glass bit of a snot to get at and usally has to be connected by feel.

Scoobyboy,
This will work ok if you fit a subaru towbar but they are expensive . Mine cost half the price of a genuine one and is made by David Murphy Towing Brackets . Even the local dealer uses this make .

i understand and agree they are expensive but i don't like the idea of splicing in to the main wiring when there is a plug that you could take apart and join in that way. it just saves on having a lot of scotch loks breaking in to the loom and causing bad connections.
could solder them i spose

I think it might vary with the MY. I had a Subaru towbar fitted to my 95 by the local dealer, and as well as wiring in the electrics for the socket, they also fitted the dash light that tells you the trailer indicators are flashing.
I thought it was not a bad deal, as I told them the prices I had from other places and it ended up 140 including VAT. It was 2 or 3 years ago, but that was not much more than the lowest I got elsewhere and I have not had any trouble with it at all.

Question

I have a 96 Legacy, and am also thinking about a home towbar install. I have a Witter bar (for the Legacy). Any reasons why I shouldn't connect the electrics to the plug in the jack bay? I assume I'll have to do a bit of checking to sus out the pins in the connector.

Just because you've got the aftermarket towbar doesn't mean you can't get the Subaru wiring kit from your local garage ? Surely they must sell this seperatley ?

Steve.

hi there
if you have bought the aftermarket electrics
u may need to cut the plug off, but too use a Scooby kit just plugs in, the only wire to be cut is the MANDATORY FOG LIGHT wire which is straight forward. DON'T FORGET to upgrade the indicator relay (normally in kit) for trailer flasher warning, normal indicator relay in not normally heavy duty enough to run the flashers for a long time. IT WILL BURN OUT.....!!!!

Question

......still on Legacies..... I have looked for a connector in the N/S jack space in my '94 Legacy GT but can't find one. (My UK model has one).

There is a 4-pin connector next to the wiring at the O/S tail lamps but the wiring colours do not match the lighting colours. Anyone know what this is for?

The US Haynes manual shows a trailer connection for '96-97 models - anyone know if this is only for US? Were they fitted for Japan?
