Question

Just fitted a TEK 2 and first thing I noticed on start up was the idling was all over the place. Thought maybe this is just the new ECU learning...But the problem hasn't gone away, even after a 10 mile drive.

This never happend before.

Could it be that the MAF has gone?

Maybe the old ECU had 'learnt' to compensate for the dodgy MAF and so I didn't notice it? Does this mean I had a dodgy MAF for however long? It's odd to be in a car that idled perfectly, now it goes from 100-1000 on each cycle...

What do I do?

I just took the car for another spin, same idling problem. Parked up, disconnected MAF and hey presto! Idling perfect.

So definately the MAF. (Right?)

(I'm glad I got the TEK2 today, else I would never have noticed this failed MAF and who knows what might have happend)

Right. The reset messes up compensatory learning which keeps the original ECU going. If you refit the original ECU it will now do the same as unplugging it resets it.

Worrying.

I wonder how many people out there are running failing MAFs and don't realise?

Another tell tale sign was my car was feeling faster and faster - maybe this is the colder weather...maybe its the leaner mixture.

Dr. Banks, is there a difference between an AE802 TEK 2 and an AE801 TEK 2?

No difference assuming just the ECU report code number is altered and not the original code of the Tek 2 which is AE802.

Hi Jake,

To be honest, I was too scared to floor it - you heard how the idling sounded - felt like the car was gonna cut out!

I did have a GTi up my *** when I came onto the A406 and took it to about 4000rpm and it did shift - more noticable was the increase in turbo noise and the dump valve (due to higher boost!)

I guess until I change the MAF, I won't know...Thanks anyway...you probably saved my engine

Have you managed to source a MAF sensor? Bet you can't wait to give it a good run
