1998 UK Turbo

Replace O/S Rocker Cover Gasket
Replace O/S Gearbox Output Oil Seal
Replace Rear Diff Input Seal
Replace Rear Diff Output Seals
Diff Oil, Geabox Oil, Labour

Total they want is £406 (inc VAT) for this work. Is this a lot?...

How essential is this work? It was the only problems picked up in the service I had about 3 weeks ago. There are no spots of oil at all on my garage floor and I'm just wondering if I should leave this and just keep checking the fluid levels?....

Then again I don't want the rear diff to go!...

Any advice appreciated,
Matt.

The rocker gasket takes about an hour to do, and thats not rushing. As for the rear diff items, look under the back of your car. You will be able to see if there are any leaks around the diff. Most cars I have seen have a small amount of "weep" from the seals leaving a slight damp look. I guess this is normal. The same for the gearbox seals as well, get under the car and have a look. If your not certain ask for a second opinion from another garage.

I'll definately get the rocker cover gasket done, but as for the gearbox and rear diff....

Do you think I should monitor the oil levels in the gearbox and the diff say each week?...
If I notice them going down rapidly then I'll get the seals done, if not, then I'll just leave them as it'll be cheaper to top-up than get rhe seals done.

I'd rather invest £400 odd in a decat downpipe, a knocklink and a few other bits and bobs for the car...

I'll also get a 2nd opinion from somewhere, it's just most of these garages see a "Scooby Owner" and think we're mega loaded... Hike up the prices!...

£400 is cheaper than a new box if the oil pisses out

same goes for diff

having said that if it was me i would just keep an eye on it they do leak a little as the seals get hard not realy a problem though

Bear in mind rocker cover gaskets are around £20 a piece or something silly, and the ones round the spark plug holes are £50 for a set. I don't think the price is unreasonable given what needs to be taken apart, and the replacement of all the fluids cost a fair bit too.

I assume that's not just the labour though?

On second thoughts, they are only replacing one side of the rocker cover gaskets.

As to whether or not it's necessary, plenty of cars weep oil on to the heads. The problem with the shaft seals is you don't see them leak until they move.

Sorry they want £406 including parts....

The OS Rocker Cover Kit is £32-50 (ex vat)
Rear Diff Oil Seals £14-60 (ex vat)
Rear Diff Input Seal £9-20 (ex vat)
OS Gearbox Output Seal £12-50 (ex vat)
Diff Oil £14 (ex vat)
Gearbox Oil £18 (ex vat)

I guess I'd better get it done really!
