Mine is the same at the moment. Lumpy up to about 4000rpm the takes off, better when warm and to rich at tickover.
Spoke to ScoobySport and BRDevelopments and they both recon the Lambda sensor has been cooked.
New one on order.

Hi Rimpy, I have a MY97 uk turbo
when I bought it and drove it home I had the same problem with it.
I put some redex fuel injection cleaner in the petrol and drove it hard for the full tankfull
Now seems to have cleared up.
Just a thought costs about a fiver.
Good luck

Rimpy,
Sounds to me like it's sensing too much boost and cutting the fuel etc. My old MY97 used to to it every now and again and the only cure is to clean the wastegate and associated pipework with brake cleaner, then connect the two green plugs under the drivers side dash. This would then give me about 9 months trouble free motoring
Steve.

Rimpy,
My previous scoob used to do the same after its services for approx 3-500miles, we didn't put in any injector cleaner the next time, and the problem seemed to clear up! Just a thought.

Hi Rimpy,
your prob could be any of the above suggestions, but . . . . Just a thought
. . . to confuse you even more . . . .
One of the most common causes of the symptoms that you describe is the Turbo Solenoid getting bunged up.
Its a little cylindrical thingy mounted under the bonnet on the left just forward of the bulkhead, with a thin vacuum pipe going to it. Try removing it and giving it a thorough clean,
It cured the prob on my car,
Cheers
