Unhappy

Yes, another problem.... They do say they come in threes !!!

I was driving down some country road last week when my speedo jumped from 60ish to 120 and then back to 60.

*Nope, I didn't sneeze and hit the accelerator*

Since then, the Speedo has been intermittently faulty. Every now and then the speedo drops to zero whilst I am driving along. Eventually it corrects itself.

Anyone encountered this before ??

Is this likely to be a fault at source, or fault behind the dash ??

All help appreciated.

Scott.

Sounds like the kph/mph converter is failing (assuming, of course, that your STi HAS been converted to display MPH. I've experienced the same thing a couple of times on my Legacy RS and have a new one ready to fit but it's sorted itself again for the mo' so I'll wait.

On the Legacy, it's fitted behind the dash but I'm fairly certain it's on the gearbox end of the speedo cable on an Impreza.

Phil in the Parts department at Park Lane in Hampshire knows his stuff and was very helpful when mine went - 01420 544300.

Thanks Brian. I'll give him a call.

Service coming up this month anyway, so will try and get all done at once...

Much as everyone else has said.

I had very similar problem on the blackbeast, did same thing, then it stopped working completley and then 'check engine' light came on.

Basically turned out to be the mechanical converter/delimiter had broken, got a new one, hey presto problem fixed.

If you have a digital trip then I *think* the device is electronic, whereas if you don't it's mechanical, in which case open the engine and look down near the downpipe and you should see a cable going down into gearbox, this will be speedo cable, check it's connected, then see if you still have problems.

Device on sti is certainly electronic. It will be a problem with the pulse converter, which will be close to the sender on the gear box I think?

mine drops down to zero at 140mph. Which I found out when some trusted friend was driving my car (I was in it). It can be very disconcerting.

I remember mike tuckwood also had the same intermittent problem with his sti 5 type r, but the problem is purely electrical and not car specific as mine is an sti4!

Cheers for the response.

I'll have a look, but will probably take it along for the mechanic to check out.
