Question

if i change my standard D/V on my MY97 Turbo, which should i look at?

without spending silly silly money!

what gives a Whooosh sound?
what gives that 'Flappy' WRC sound/Dingy escort chatter?

which makes?

can u just unclip the standard D/V and fit the nu one straight on??

or what else do u need???

Cool

Phil,

You want a vent to atmosphere type dumpvalve. Make sure whatever make you get is designed to work after the air flow meter otherwise you'll have idling problem's. There is still some doubt as to the benifits/dangers of fitting one of these to an Impreza, some experience fueling problems with an overrich or lean mixture. Have a word with Graham Cowland at TSL as he was showing me some last Friday.

The wastegate chatters on the WRC cars and Dingy's Escort because they run high boost pressures without a dumpvalve fitted. When they lift off the throttle the wastegate opens quickly to try and regulate the boost pressure. Try this on the scoob and the turbo won't last very long though.

Cheers

Phil, I replaced mine with a forge unit.

I have a UK MY97, running the link, the main reason for changing the D/V. Higher boost and all that.

The dump valve makes a strange 'CHIN' sound. I have NEVER heard anything else like it. A few friends like it, and want theirs to do the same. I on the other hand want the WRC chatter. I have been told that a widget can be fabricated, to do this.

Dan

PS. Sorry forgot the mention that its recuirlatry unit.

Ive been using the vent to atmos Forge unit on mine without any problems at all.
Makes a sort of WRC chatter rather than a wooshing sound. Mike sells them at Scoobymania or go direct at about £130-00 inc.

Cheers

I have a HKS SQL Blow off valve.

Its a noisy thing, very noisy, Especialy if you are going for it, I went past a bus stop and deliberatly changed it was loud enough to get a teenage Britney wana be to scream, made my 7 year old laugh.

If I had to drive the car all day every day then it would be too much, but mines a toy so I dont mind, it was not cheap but its polished so looks nice & shiny under the bonnet, I dont think they do much more than a standard job though.

I dont know where you are but if you are down London area and want to come and listen to mine then you are more than welcolm.

Cheers

Barge.

Salsa-K,

I've used a variety of BoVs. They all make slightly different noises. Fave has to be the APEXI fitted at the moment.....goes with a lovely "tttttsssseeewwwwww".

Frightens sheep and old people in the Yorks Dales....Not that there's many left mind you...

Sheep that is

Phil, the Link is a replacement ecu. You don't need this to run the D/V.

Thanks for dropping the pic. thing. I was trying to forget that!

The bloke that owned my scoob before me , had a Bailey Motorsport D/V fitted , makes a nice loud Whoooooosh , better than RS turbos and the like , and I think it is a piston type D/V from what I was told , not too sure , but if anyone else knows about Bailey D/Vs , give me a shout.

The only reason the change your BOV is if it is faulty, and even then stick to a recirculating type. Vent to atmosphere valves will cause fuelling to go rich (how rich varies from car to car) on the overrun. The only way to prevent this fuelling problem (AFAIK) is to remap the ECU to accomodate the valve.

WRC cars make that "chatter" as they don't run a dump valve. The noise is caused either by the air going supersonic as it is forced back through the spinning turbo or when the backflow of compressed air oscillates the wastegate open and closed (I forget which). You can remove and blank off your dump valve for a few pence to acheive this sound, although it may impact the life of your turbo & associated pipework slightly. Having said that I know of one Scooby owner who has been running his car like this for 18 months with no ill effects ... yet!

If it's a loud "whoosh" you are after you can get this by fitting a cone type air filter (e.g. K&N at around £60). This makes the standard recirculating valve "whoosh" easily loud enough to turn heads, plus has the benefit of helping the engine breathe a little easier at the top end.

Hope this helps!

A.

Simply fitting a cone filter will not knacker your MAF sensor.

What can knacker the MAF sensor is fitting a cone filter badly so that vibrations damage the sensor. As can fitting a badly designed cone filter that leaks filter oil or doesn't filter the air sufficiently, although this can just as easily happen with an aftermarket panel filter.

It's my understanding that it is only the later (MY99 and on I believe) hot-film MAF sensors that are fragile in this respect.

Andrew.

Cool

salsa ,
loudest dump-valve that i ever heard was a collins, i used to have it on my car but took it off as every time i changed gear everyone within 100 yards looked round !! and the flames on overun ( also popped and banged ) were something else . oh , you will need a cat-less exhaust to reap the full potential .

The Blitz Dual Sound blow off valve is the dog`s. You get a WRC sound, or you can bolt on this little filter thingy to make it a bit quieter. Cost £238 though. Priceless looks you get from people walking along the road, will turn heads..

Have to agree with Guady, I've got the Blitz on my 96' UK and it is a head turner. Leave the filter off for ultimate head turning ability! :-)

dont know that much about dump valve sound quality but the chatter you seek is wastegate related which i got on my maestro turbo by reducing intake restriction and hence silencing.dont know if it works on a scooby though.

Got my car back from PowerEngineering yesterday evening with a Bailey dump valve fitted. My car is a non-modified M95 WRX and it makes a major difference when changing gear, alot less lag.
I'd recommend getting one.
