I've recently bought an MY00 Impreza and although its not making any worrying noises and I'm sure its all in good order, overall road noise seems quite loud to me, particularly from the rear.

Shes on 43K, has STi gold alloys with new ish tyres. Doesn't bother me but there doesn't seem to be much sound deadening.

The brand of tyres can make a surprising difference. Mine had Pirellis on it when I bought it and it made a loud resonating hum once you reached 50ish. The local dealer thought it was the rear diff pinion bearing. I replaced the tyres with Goodyear F1s and the noise went away... Presumably the stiffer casing of the Pirellis was enough to cause something to resonate.

But no, they don't have a huge amount of sound deadening, keeps the weight down

Mine was noisy as hell on dunlops when i got it, changed to P-zero's and is much quieter now. (more engine noise less road noise, the way it should be)

I have a 97 WRX and it is loud at the rear. I can even hear the brake pads on the discs. worried me for a while, but it appears to be normal by all accounts.

I am looking into some sound proofing for the rear if anyone has any suggestions?

Yes the tyres do make a big difference. Mine has got some of those awful Avon ZZ1's on it which are rock solid and make quite a lot of noise. Thought the rear diff was going to begin with, the dealer even replaced it under warrenty but still the same noise. Only went with different tyres.

Yes, it's very dependant on tyres. The Avons on the back of mine are terrible. I switched to the original Bridgestones, and its vastly reduced!

Suggestions to decrease noise:
- Buy a noisekiller boot/ whole car kit (I think that's what they call them) from scoobyshop
- Line the boot floor with a layer of carpet underlay (some types are better than others)
- Apply dynamat or similar to spare wheel well, boot floor, rear door skin
- Change to quieter tyres

Worth putting some thick felt under the rear seat squab too.
