Does any one Know of this irritating idling??
It usually happens when after a long motorway or short blast drive and you then stop at a set of lights.
The revs go up and down from 500rpm to 1200rpm and then stablises.
People think am a boy racer at the lights its embarrasing!!

I faced the same problem and it seems that the Air Flow Meter (AFM) was causing the fault.
It can be found in one of two ways -
1. When Idling check if your car running VERY rich (black cloud coming out from the back box).
2. Running the "check engine light" test and getting error code 23.
If your car is still under warranty just get the AFM replaced.
If not try clean it first and if it wouldn't help then replace it.

Hope it help,
Eran.

I've got a MY96 UK with a similar problem, how would I go about cleaning the MAF sensor ?

What fluid/spray ?

Darren.

Just had the car back from its 22,500m service, though I done only 16,250m.
I told them about the erratic idling and also the engine check light came on for about 1 minute when I accelerated.

They found the problem to a fault with the LAMBDA Probe. Which was replaced under warranty!!

Does any one Know what a LAMBDA Probe is??

the lambda probe or o2 sensor detects how much oxygen is in the exhaust gas and either richens up the mixture or weakens it off depending on what it needs.
on turbos it is located under the clutch reservoir on the downpipe from the turbo to the cat.
