Cool

Having seen some of the excellent results of engine mods both on track & on-strip, the time has come to eek a little bit more power out of PTMW! but on a small budget ( ) and reliability needs to stay top of the tree as well...

So as a base, we have a standard MY99 UK engine with a full PPP.

Where to start?

First off, I've ordered a Knocklink as part of the GB currently on the go

Downpipe?

What is recommended for attachment to an STi system? Won't be able to change the STi stuff for the time being.

Will that affect (adversely) the PPP ECU? Should I replace the ECU?

Air Filter?

Standard at the mo - is it worth getting something else & if so what?

Injectors?

Any point in changing for some higher flowing ones?

(Guess ECU gets changed at the same time )

Fuel pump?

What one?

Anything else that I can simply do without FMIC & larger turbo?

Anything else I need on a safety basis?

Anything else I should consider?

Thanks

(Can't wait )

Downpipe would be best first move imho.. open neck H&S with splitter if I was buying one would be where I would go.. but lots of others on offer.. just make sutre it is not a closed neck one.

Panel filter maybe worth a go..

Backbox

ECUTek remap.. getting more expensive..

Yep, agreed downpipe is a good mod, spool up is much better. Also induction kit works very well, I've really noticed this when switching back to standard from my HKS spf kit.

I have just sold my K&N induction kit. Personally, the noise of it did my head in. Not to mention the potential MAF problems they can cause on 98/99 cars. Downpipe highly recommended though, very noticeable improvement over standard.

Edited to say. Got my downpipe from Midland Impreza. Mild steel £110.00. Good fit and at the end of the day it is a pipe without a cat in it. Just like all the rest at twice the price.

I would down pipe, got a 3 inch scooby sport job on my car, works better than the HKS I did have.

Then I would look at the injectors, if not replace get the purged & cleaned to bring back to top performance, try TSL, fuel pump, if you going to start power the car replace & upgrade the fuel pump so that the injectors can get all the fuel they want, then air filter, I have a HKS greenmush room jobbie, works OK, makes the induction roar much more noticable.

Not sure if you have done brakes on the car or not, if not then I would do them next, then oil cooler, then add a IC spray unit to keep the charge temps down, every little helps

Just a thought that others may disagree with but Newbies like PPP chips, warrenty friendly and straightforward performance etc. If you are going to get serious you'll need a remap so why not sell your PPP chip to help finance.

NENO - my97 so not trying to get a PPP chip cheap

Cool

So, downpipe first then

H&S or SS one.

Injectors - STi ones help? (yellows?)

Fuel pump at the same time...

Interested once that lots on about the ECU - will it just adjust for the extra fueling or is it time to swap out & get a map done?

Neno - my PPP ECU is an MY99 so I'm afraid not for your car

Barge - brakes (Brembo/AP) & handling (Leda etc) are sorted - its just the need for speed

regards i/c spray 'cos I've got a SECS to manage it

have a K&N panel filter going spare if your interested.
seen probabably 2000 miles at most.

I'd go with,
Link ECU > Bob @ BR Developments
Wallbro 255 gl pr hr Fuel pump > Mark @ Lateral
3" open neck downpipe with splitter > Pat @ 22b

good prices top people.

Andy

P.s Your on the slippery slope now my friend.

edit to add, I wouldn't worry about the injectors just yet.
yellows are 440cc, good enough for a while yet. (someone correct if I'm wrong on the size, dont like misinformation)

It depends on how much power your looking for
Hopefully you still have your other ecu? if not i think these can be purchased quite cheaply.
My car is of similar spec to yours at the moment, if i were not selling her then i would probably go down this route:-

Knocklink (have already)
Defi gauges (have already)
Bigger brembo 4 pot brakes (alreay have )
Down pipe (yup one of these too )
Bigger turbo (ahhhh looking towards 300bhp here)
ECUTEK remap for the above (yup 300 big ones )

The downpipe isnt that expensive, probably around the 200ish quid mark, the remap would be around 700, 6/700 for a bigger turbo, 150 for a complete knocklink inc sensor, 500 for the defi's.

A grand total of around 2300 quid. (inc the defi's but im not sure if you have similar or the same already?)

you could also consider headers and up-pipe to make the tdo4 pretend it's bigger.

the ppp ecu should cope with this and decat d/p , a knocklink and a few runs on delta dash will help make sure.

Rich

Budget is as usual second-hand

(BTW - you owe me a phone call says Disco? )

Target is a safe 300bhp or near as dammit, so seeing as I'm around 250, thats a 20% increase That'll keep me able to see off most things on track as I'm losing out to bigger bhp stuff on the straights, only to catch 'em up in the corners again...

FMIC/bigger turbo might have to wait a while

There's some useful info here - so thanks peeps.

I haven't got the STi injectors - are they worth getting over standard UK? I don't know the CC of the UK ones..

Will I be able to get 300 (ish) using the PPP ECU or will I need an upgrade? Upgrade will be safer but obviously cost a bit more...

Any further tips?

Yours is a phase II 99MY ? which... if the same as mine, has yellow injectors as standard which are 440cc.

If not you can have mine.
as I now have some nice red 740cc ones in there.
