Dump valve purchase
I am collecting my WRX UK300 on Friday this week, and I have spoken with Well Lane Turbo Centre in Batley. They manufacture their own dump valves. Does anybody know if they are any good ? Also, they said to check the Scoobynet, but as yet I cannot find any reference to them. Any help would be appreciated.
You haven't even collected the car yet and you're already on about changing the DV? You do know that these aftermarket ones make no noticeable difference to performance, it's all granny scaring and pose value?
Greasemonkey is again correct in his summing up of the dump valve but the granny scaring and pose is what its all about.
I have just purchased the very same dump valve for my STI8 u are talking about from Well Lane. They do not manufacture their own they buy them from Collins Performance Engineering.
Just get one they are very loud indeed

Granny scaring and posing is not where it's at for all of us. If I'm going to spend money on my car, I'd much rather spend on things that make it work better rather than cause it to make silly noises.
The quieter and less conspicuous my car is, the less unwanted attention it attracts. Stealth is the new loud.

Try an APS dv from g-sport motorsport. They are twin stage so when driving normally they re-circ (silently and giving the MAF sensor signal it should get) then on full chat they VTA making a noise that obviously makes you go faster!
Having said that i have a HKS SSQV which i'm happy with although i'd go for APS one if i did it again.

Now im confused! I understood the dump valve allows the turbo to spin more freely helping to eliminate possible damage and also pick up faster. The car already has a ppp what more can you suggest for £140.

I was under the impression that Imprezas don't like atmos DVs? I had a HKS SSQV on my GTIR and the only difference apart from the sound was even more fuel consumption.
I do like them and would get a HKS again but not if it will damage the engine.
The air flow sensor measures the air entering the engine and will fuel to suit. with the standard dump valve, there is no loss of air as it is sent back through the system and all is well and the fueling stays ok.
With a atmos dump valve, alot of the measured air is lost when the dump valve goes pssssst but the management doesn't know this, so for that second the fueling is rich.
If you have a CAT then in time it will slowly get damaged. If your CATs are removed then you will get a pop and a wee flame out the exhaust when nice and hot.
I don't think the engine will suffer very much, but fuel consumption will drop.
If you want a dump valve, I would probably go for the twin-piston bailey unit.

Thanks guys, have now made my mind up not to bother. The wife will have a fit if it costs me money because of any damage caused by mods. Im sure she will find something to spend the spare cash on.
Many thanks guys

does any1 know roughly how mucj boost the oem recirc valve can handle before it becomes necesary 2 upgrade?im thinking of getting the scooby ecu upgrade that should run 16.5psi it should be ok 4 this right?
All this talk of dumpvalves and noise has got me thinking.
If someone designed an electronic gizmo that was tripped by a microswitch on your clutch to play a PTSHHH noise though an underbonnet speaker. You could have the characteristic dumpvalve noise without any of the apparent disadvantages of VTA.
Sounds like a STUPID idea I know, but imagine how many of these you could sell via Halfords to the Max Power community for all their normally aspirated Saxos and Corsas.
THE PRETEND DUMPVALVE!!
Whoever patented it would probably make a sodding fortune! Like whoever patented the nightmare that is... "NEON WASHER JETS"!!
You could make it so that you could download whatever noise you wanted and change the noise of the dumpvalve every week (a bit like ringtones).
You could have the hiss of a steam train or the sound of someone cracking a whip or maybe even a cow mooing or something equally bizarre!
The sky's the limit.
Got to go now, I'm off to RS to buy a load of bits to make one. See you at the patent office!

Rich, they exsist - I saw one advertised quite a while back
Can anyone answer they question about what psi an OE dumpvalve is good for?
And what are symptoms of leaking under full boost?

Darn it! Beaten to the punch
Jay,
I would imagine that like most things it depends on the age and condition of the dumpvalve. A good one may be ok for 1.4 bar, a bad one won't. A knackered one won't even handle standard boost (common fault on 97-98 cars)
You'll know if it's leaking as you will probably be able to hear it and it should register as an oscillation or slight drop in boost on your boost gauge to what you would normally see.
