Dude...you are the man!!!
But you forget to mention the year... they are different between pre 99 and 99 onwards.. those codes are for 99 cars...

85 charge

If there any fualts detected by the ECU (ie faulty sensors), they are normally logged in the ECU memory...
There are two ways of reading the memory:
1. Connect the Subaru Select Monitor and read them
2. Connect the read-memory plugs under the dashboard and translate the MIL flashes into the above numbers..
That will tell you where the fault lies... if there is one...

aw shucks - the secret is out now.
Beneath the steering column there are four connectors - black, male/female and green male/female.
To read the fault memory
Connect the black ones and turn the ignition on. If the check engine light flashes morse code at you, open the bonnet and go and see if it still there
The long pulses are the decimals and the short pulses the digits - as in FLAAAAAAAAAASH, FLAAAAAAAAAAAAASH, FLASH, FLASH, FLASH PAUSE is a code 23 which I have seen lots of in the last week.
A non-fault car will flash evenly and continuously.

there is much more interesting things you can do with the connectors - one of which is to check the boost solenoid for example, reset the ECU, properly, clear ECU memory.
Buy Training WRX from Scoobymania, that is one source of the information - and it is clear that there are number users of this site that know the secret black magic

Mr Steve Bijok is a young and up coming tuner.... smart guy.
If u like Subaru ... U will love this book. Is very informative and worth buying.
So go and grab the book ... but .. there is no trouble code inside.
If u r looking for trouble code ... buy Autodata book .... hahahahaha ... is all in there.

Err, non technical bloke here.
If I plug these two black "things" together on my MY98 I assume the engine light will begin to flash. So according to the advise above if it flashes "smoothly" then all is sweetness and light, if it flashes in "morse" then there may be a problem that I am not currently aware of ( told you I wasn't technical ). If this is the case can someone let me know, and if possible what the "codes" are for a MY98.

U can even make the engine perform better .. at least 15% improvement on the torque by working ... on the ...... *something got to do wit the trouble code connector* .... fast buck.
R U all ready for the 2000 onwards trouble code???? Only for the 7S type of ECU wit 3 connector .......
