Andy,

I've not tried the injector cleaner, but the carburetor cleaner was pants and that was directly applied rather than being added to the fuel. After trying it, I did the job properly by taking the carb off and cleaning it by hand.

I presume the injector cleaner is added to the fuel so I suspect that you won't get as good a result as if you had them ultrasonic cleaned. The pintle and nozzle of the injector is critical to getting a good mixture and a regular spray pattern, and an injector with crud in it won't atomise the fuel properly. I think ultrasonic cleaning is the only treatment that is worthwhile.
Look up your local Bosch Injection specialist in Yellow Pages - they should be able to do the job for £25-£35 per injector.

Your problem may be nothing to do with this at all of course!. As Moray says, prime suspect would be plugs and/or the coil packs.

Rgds,

Alex

Question

I have an occasional problem with stuttering under hard acceleration. I realsie that this could be caused by a number of things including spark plugs etc.

I wanted to try redex injector cleaner first as its the cheapest option and quick to do.

Does anybody have any opinion on Redex and its use in a WRX (or any Turbo Impreza)? Are there any problems? Should I buy a particular redex product (there are several on the shelves at my local Halfords)?

Thanks

Andy M

Andy,

What vintage of car is it? If it's an older pre-97 model with the EJ20G engine it may be something to do with coilpack units that sit over the plugs. Just a thought.

Totally agree with Alex's remarks - ultrasonic is the way to go and the Redex stuff makes little or no difference. I wouldn't use it at all.

Diversifying slightly here...

I have conflicting sotries about how difficult it is to remove the sparkers. My dealer said 2 hours labour, dropping the engine etc. etc. A non-biased mechanic suggested 1/2 hour with a special tool and partial engine compartment stripping to gain access. Where would I get this tool? I can change a ruddy sparker myself!!

Bemused

Ive got a mate who is a top mechanic (my opinion). He said the other day that he would leave if he was working at a dealers that took on a Scoob franchise, because there is just so little room to work on the engines, and he used to complain about my celica! He has said previsouly that Japs must have very thin arms! (p.s. his comments were tongue in cheek)
