Metallic Rattle
#1
I've been driving round in my STi V for about a month now and I have noticed a metallic rattle inside the car. It sounds like a thin metal tray is loose and vibrating against something when I go over sharp bumps. Not sure if the noise is coming from the dash or the drivers door.
Anyone got any ideas? or do I just turn the stereo up !

David, I have experienced something similar on my US Impreza 2.5 RS. It was exhaust heatsheild rattling agains the muffler (back box). Check that. It could be a heatsheild rattling against any exhaust part. It's pretty common. All you have to do is just bent the rattling peice away from the exhaust piping.

I have the same rattling on my 95 wrx. It's been in the garage on 5 occasions for them to sort it but after while it comes back.
Only happens when applying power. It seems to be the housing from the turbo to the bonnet bulge that is making the noise.

I also own a 95 WRX wagon and it's going to the garage for the second time this week due to a nasty scraping rattle sound.
It seems to be coming from directly beneath the drivers seat or underneath the middle engine bay and is dependant on the revs - so I'm assuming it resonance of some kind - it gets worse as the engine gets hotter.
It ain't half loud though :-(

Found this on the MRT Site.
WRX Low RPM Rattle
A defect common to the 96/97 model WRX is an annoying vibration (metallic rattling noise) from the engine bay at low rpm (1000-1500rpm).
This has been traced by Subaru to a poorly insulated solenoid switch located on the right strut tower. The solenoid itself is located on a small plate that is screwed to the tower. Solution is to add some soft rubber spacers to the tower side of the plate fasteners. The rattle should completely disappear.

Heat shield (around the turbo, next to intercooler) is a possibility. Mine's started to rattle after putting on a downpipe and removing the cat. Bending the metal helped, temporarily.
Removal of the heat shield is another solution. There's another thread on that somewhere. But what happens if it rains and water leaks onto the very hot turbo? Couldn't it be damaged?

Doesn't the heat shield provide a direct path for the air flow from the bonnet scoop.
Any side effects from removing it, as mine is now sooo rattly is getting beyond a joke.
Is it an easy job to remove?

David, this may sound daft but there is a small metal plate in the ashtray which rattles against the mountings behind the trim - I disturbed this in my sti V when fitting my own single DIN hifi....worth pulling the thing out to try bending the plate down (not too much or you won't be able to open the ashtray once it has been pushed back in) I never use the ashtray so have sealed it up completely - one less rattle to contend with.
cheers,
Paul W

The rattle from the aerial seemed to appear about 30mph then disappear as you got faster. If you coasted to a halt in neutral the rattle would sometimes disappear a second or two after I stopped. Twanging the aerial slightly by hand produced the same sound, then when I pushed it back into the A-pillar it stopped.
