Angry

Just had the 60000 mile service and they changed the diff oils. In changing the rear diff oil they found bits of (what look like) the teeth in the oil! The car is a MY00 PPP (no other changes).

I think therefore I need a new rear diff or at least one of the gears. Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it? It's a new one on me and I've been kicking round the BBS for 5 years

Thanks for info
Richard

it doesn't require a new diff unless it was the diff locking which caused the load on the teeth to exceed what they can handle.

All you need is a 3.54 crown wheel and you would also do well to change the pinion at the same time, since it will have been meshing with a damaged crown wheel.

Shouldnt be too much to sort out, and I have seen it before.

Ok, thanks Adam. I'll see what the dealer says when they open it up and have a look

Cool

Rich it sounds to me like your Diff has or is locked solid, do you ever have trouble going round corners?

Maybe you should buy a new diff! same spec should be around €800 but they will have to build it or you could get the new spec LSI diff for around €1000 and will come ready built.

Go for the new LSI one with the optional furry dice in conjunction with the new 97 ron BP ultimate fuel and get a massive 500ps increase.

The furry dice must be blue with yellow spots as the red ones just can't cut it in the twisties

Hope this helps

Strange, all that information was exactly what I told you in an e-mail a few minutes before your posting .

Anyhow yes I've gone for the LSD (not LSI, that's a drug!!) option, so we'll see what a difference it makes...

I thought LSD was a drug?

So hows the cheap new diff working? Next you'll be using the diff problem as an excuse for why your never able to keep up with us in the twisties

You know if the diff is locked your car will go faster, thats why BMW always build rear wheel drive cars and also probably why you can go the same speed as my STi on the Autobahn

Seen any Evo8's in random backwaters recently?

Hmm... you're right, LSD is the drug... LSI was Love, Sex, Intelligence - a song by The Shamen about 15 years ago!

Car feels much happier round corners now - it seemed to be unhappy whether to oversteer or understeer before, now it's much better balanced. So watch out for me on an Autobahn near you, eating STi8's .
