Can anyone verify the data on this test?.Although the picture is not too clear it looks to me that the type-r puts out around 285bhp,but astonishingly the red figure at -11bhp would suggest that the standard uk car is producing around 270bhp on this test.Surely this is not the case,or does anybody know differently?.

The -11bhp is at the cursor.

At this point at (approx) 3900rpm the Type R was producing 175bhp and the UK car 164bhp.

The Type R with ex-Prodrive rear silencer peaked at 280 ish bhp.
The MY98 with Scoobysport back box and Ramair filter peaked at around 245bhp.

Interesting that the UK car produces more power lower down.

For those who are wondering where this picture is.....

and go down to the bottom of the page for the IWOC Power Engineering Dyno Day.

ps I'll try and get it in focus next time.

Bloody hell!

Were there any other mods or did it make 245 on the back box and filter alone!?

Thanks,

So bascially if I were to get a Type R I should change out the STi back box as well as putting a RAMair filter in?

Yee Har

Pretty impressive eh? ;-)

These figures have now been ratified in numerous other dyno tests and the figures for STi's are even more stagering.

A certain magazine's new "Long Term Test" car has had the same treatment. The car is an STi4. It was dyno'd before and after the mods. The high rev figures only gave another 22bhp (272 to 294) but the mid range figures are spectacular. At 4000rpm the car was giving an extra 40bhp and an extra 50lb/ft of torque.

The mag report will be out in approx 6 weeks.

I have a question...scuse my ignorance of the more technical aspects of power and torque (so please avoid flaming me) but if the power/torque increases are so significant why did the infamous Autocar test of a UK vs Prodrived (exhaust, Ramair and ecu swap) conclude a little while back that there were very little 'on the road' differences between the standard UK model and a Ramair'd one?

Has anyone been able to perform some meaningful and controlled speed/time trials between a modified MY99 (aka Scoobysport for example) against a non-modified MY99 ? Surely this would be relatively simple to set up rather than the rolling road analysis which although useful, does not seem to bear relevance on the road given the above magazine test. Someone prove me wrong please with some hard evidence rather than the 'pleasing sound and cosmetic appearance type arguments' (which I agree are valid comments however I am looking at actual improvements at the wheel).

For me this would prove whether the outlay (whether with Prodrive (£££) or Scoobysport (better quality)) was worth it.

Such tests are rarely scientific, as there is always a difference between the two drivers. Speed and efficiency of gear changes is the main point. If you take this out of the equation, why not measure it on the rollers. Prodrive always said that their chip only improved mid range driveability. They never said that "maximum" power was increased by 15%, just that the power was increased by 15%. Which at 4000rpm, it is.

For example... the "Driven Esses" I was able to drive this over a second quicker than the presenters. This would have put the 22B in a different league. They knew the track, but I knew the car.

I was out doing some high speed testing at an airfield yesterday. A type R was accelerated down the runway, before and after some mods. 141mph between markers before and 153mph after. These were the best of the runs each time. It shows that we are doing the right thing, but the rollers will show where the increase is and how big it is.

The customer was VERY pleased.

Are these secret mods or are you going to let us in on the secret. Is it the famous downpipe ?.

Gav D

The reason Autocar said there was very little between the Prodrive and standard is because there is little. We only saw 12-15bhp on the rollers. There is some thought that Prodrive have a 50% sucess ratio with their conversion. We will dyno a car tomorrow where the owner is happy with the conversion and another one a week on Saturday where he is not so. A std car will also be tried at the same time. My car was the one that put out over 240bhp compared to the Prodrive's below 240 and the std just below 230.

Results will get posted.

It is indeed the down pipe.

Thanks Pete/Jonathan for the useful info,

Still interested if you will be rolling a stnd MY99 vs scoobysported MY99 (I've seen the Terzo rolling road results) this week to see what and where these bhp and torque differences are.

We did it on the 98MY. So the results will be the same. Adam Curtin has the dyno plots on his web site. All were Terzo's with 4,500 miles on. My Terzo was about 14-17bhp up on a std car. Mine had Scoobysports, Ramair and Super Unleaded.

Cheers

Are you saying I will get 20+ BHP on the top end and a dollop of mid range torque from a filter and Scoobysport back box ? Or do I need the downpipe as well ?

Pete,

What other mods were done to the type R to improve its performance as I find it hard to believe that fitting a larger downpipe will give such a large increase in performance.

There were no other mods to the STi4. It is EVO's new long termer. The car was in and out in approx 10 minutes.

The article will be out in the near future.

Steve

Your 5 dr WRX will do all of this with a decent back box. The down pipe will add yet more power and torque, reducing the turbo lag too. The car is much more driveable... at any revs. It was designed to give 22B's some power over 6500 rpm. 22B's pull, hard, to the rev limiter in 5th, with this set up. WRX STi's are just as good and the owners are amazed at the car once we've had some spanners on it;-)
