What do you recon folks. Would something like the Apex i Super AVC be a substantial improvement on a mechanical controller?

Depends what you want Chaz. If you want to be able to vary boost by gear or play with the duty cycle in different parts of the rev range then an electronic controller is better, but if not then the mechanical type is probably enough. MBC tend to react quicker to boost spikes, but the S-AVC is very good, but apart from all the snazzy features, I'm not convinced that it's £300 better.

IMHO, an electronic controller is not a "substantial improvement" just more tweakable.

Better part-throttle control.
And that's about it IMHO. There's the safety factor you get from ECU-controlled, although fuel-cut (& KnockLink) should sort out any real potential disasters, and this elecronic advantage assumes that the electronic boost gadget gets feedback from eg a knock sensor...

It would appear that you can vary the boost pressure in 500rpm increments up to 9500rpm. There are also setting for boost in different gears.
So what would I be able to achieve with this? I'm thinking of things other then outright power which I guess will be uneffected as I'm running the highest boost possible on the standard turbos.

1) With the EBC I can run 1,25 bar in first and second which I wasn't able to do with the MBC.
2) Rain or shine, always running the same boost
3) Possibility of changing the boostsettings to another programm or even on 'OFF' if scooby needs to go for maintenance and you want to be sure no one at the garage wants to try the full potential of your 'friend' ;-)

Enough reasons to set you back the 300 quid i think.
