Well actually not chocolate but silver.

Just had a 60,000 miles service done and when they drained the gearbox oil and discovered the shavings. Best way to describe them is like the chocolate shavings from the top of a sarah lea gateaux. But silver.

Bit of a daft analogy but I hope it conjours up the right image.

So......... Obvious question is wadda fu...

Is my gearbox about to go ping!?
Anybody seen this before?
The garage said that they had never seen this much debris from a functional gearbox. And it is very much functional, no gear grinding or wining at all. Must be about 2 heaped teaspoons of the stuff.

If it is on it's way what price for repair\Replacement? I've seen prices of around 3.5 K on here and basically that would mean the end of my Scoob. I can't afford it.

Please tell me it's not time for a nice mondeo!!!!! Argghhhhhhhh

Don't panic! Well, not just yet If its OK i'd leave it for now and start saving. You don't say what model its from, but you can pick up second hand boxes at very reasonable prices now. OK you may have to pay a bit on the labour side to get it fitted but it can be all done and dusted for a lot less than £3.5K!

i'd say drive it until it breaks
some shavings are "normal"
huge CHUNKS... then i'd be worried

but dont fret too much if the car is
going into all gears with ease, no grinding and such -

but just in case,
perhaps do some "shopping" for used gearboxes
and get the pricing set up and sorted....
as a last resort of course!

good luck

Thanks for the replies guys and gal.

FYI it's a standard uk MY99 turbo. I'm running it on a shoe string and (if that's possible with a scoob) and big bills means bye bye.

Even though it would break my heart after all I suppose feeding and clothing my three year old should come first..... hmmmm.... no she should come first.... hmmmm.... anyway will keep it going for now.

Any guesses as to a price for a box would be welcome.

Cheers

My "coughs" best mate...destroyed my gearbox on my 95 WRX.....poped down to a place in Birminham, picked a box up with 20k on it and a quickshift ( bonus ) £450...took about a day to fit it.....and thats because we did not have a ramp...just some axel stands and blind faith........dead easy..

all the best
