1st and 2nd syncro gone on 22B.
#1
Hi,
My mate has just bought a 22B (import, MY99) and after having it only a week the syncro for first and second has gone (apparently). He can't get into 1st at all and it'll only just go into 2nd.
Is this a known problem? Is there any specialist places around that will do a better and cheaper job than a Suburu garage?
He's been quoted £1000 for a Suburu mechanic to do it 'on the side', though they will need the car for 1 month.
Any views/advice you lot can give?
Stu.
He should of bought a nice reliable Lotus.

I take it this is a uk car as your referring to a subaru dealer?
If its been purchased privately then you are pretty stuffed, if its from a dealer then you should have a warranty for it, if its a JDM car then subaru uk wont touch it with a barge pole, only if its a 22b type uk will a uk subaru dealer do anything for you (no darkened rear windows, should have a plaque and a badge on the rear saying type uk).
The gear boxes are normally pretty reliable, depending where you are in the country depends on where to go for servicing (if a JDM car) but it wont be cheap for a gearbox rebuild (and make sure your mate doesnt damage the wings/alloys as the wings unpainted cost 2.5k! and the alloys are over 800 quid each! )
Ah the fun of owning a 22B

Cheers for the info guys i'll pass it on.
The car is an import, i think that's why the Suburu mechanic offered to do it on the side.
Where abouts is Town End Garage? We live near Nottingham.
Thanks again,
Stu.

Synchro bits will be standard items (and I suspect there's nothing funny about the 22b gears either), and not overly expensive.
I'd say it's a few hours work with a press and some odd tools to sort it, I wouldn't charge 1k (unless there were female services involved ).
Synchro bits would be around 100-ish I'd suspect, plus another 30-odd in gaskets.
