After getting a new sound system put into my car, the check engine light has come on. The place that installed the system were pants, the guy managed to stop my brake lights working too ! and he has disconected a wire near the pedels, which when put back (re connected) puts my check engine light on constantly. Could this be his bad work or could it be a genuine engine problem ? the light stays on constantly when driving.

Micheal

There should be two green plugs and two black plugs under the dash (normally near the steering column) and these should be disconnected. Connecting them puts the car into diagnostic and dealer check mode.

As the CEL isn't flashing codes with them connected, it shows that you don't have any problems.

So it was alright before the install, not driven during the install and now throws a check light.

I believe in coincidences but the install stopped the brake light working!? It seems to all point to the install.......

A quick visit to the dealer will tell you why the lights gone on and possible symptoms....

I will do as pete has suggested, as i live on the isle of man and we do not have a dealer over here. I did not drive the car during the install and i have had to take it to an electrical garage to get the rear lights working again.

Pete, correct me if I'm wrong, but if the Read Memory plugs were connected, in a "no problems" situation, the CEL should flash the all clear signal, not be on constantly, as Michael has said?

If it's on all the time (and not flashing), it sounds more like the RM plugs aren't connected, and that the CEL is reporting a problem.

This is how it'd work on a Classic, do the New Age cars work differently?
