As has been pointed out, the STi version 5 is a MY99 car, so if you're been sold one on the basis that it's an MY98, either the owner doesn't know what he's selling, or you've got your first reason to be suspicious. The MY98 STi was the version 4, for what it's worth.
As for checking whether it's a real V5, how far do you want to go? The best/easiest way is to check the VIN number matches the known list of STi 5 Type R production batches.
As for physical confirmation, if you find all of the following, it's a fair bet you've got a real one!
Red top engine
Silver intercooler
Carbon fibre and aluminium bonded strut brace
No ABS
Intercooler water spray
Single coil block mounted on the left-hand branch of the inlet manifold
Driver Controlled Centre Differential - thumbwheel controller next to the handbrake, and indicator lights in instrument cluster
Rev counter in central position in cluster, 180km/h (or MPH if it's been converted) speedo to the right.
Four pot front brake calipers, two pot rears
AF040 or AF041 ECU
High level rear spoiler
Gold 5 spoke wheels with 205/50/16 tyres
If it's an STi version 4 (i.e. it really is MY98), the two most obvious visual giveaways should be the "mid level" rear spoiler, and the coil packs will be in the centre of the inlet manifold, instead of mounted to one side.

Hi all.
Would any body out there be able to let me have details of the standard specification for a MY98 STI 5 Type R.
ie. Wheels, tyres, BHP, etc.
Does this car have any common problems?
How can I verify if I am looking at a genuine Car and not a fake?
**Just been to check car out the engine number is "GC8F2DD" does this give any body any more info ??
Many Thanks
Mike
