my wrx was faster then a 22b uk car down elvington airfield, the 22b will be heavier then a standerd 280 brake impreza, so thats probably why, unless its drasticly slower

the jap spec 22B has the same gearing as a TypeR (in fact the 22B is a typeR! full name for a 22B is "WRX STi 4 TypeR 22B" with the odd bit more in there somewhere LOL)
My TypeRA seems faster than the 22B's i have driven, whether it is or not i am not 100% sure, it should be very close. The 22B is going to have more torque, but wont rev as easily, due to the extra 200CC.
The Japanese spec 22B (and TypeR) will accelerate faster than a UK spec 22B because the gearing is higher on the UK spec.

John,
"The 22B is going to have more torque, but wont rev as easily, due to the extra 200CC."
Apart from a little more piston mass, why does this 200cc affect the way the car revs?

hi moray, everything else being equal a larger capacity engine doesnt rev as easily due to the increased mass, plus the work being done to fill the extra CC and then compresing it etc. You also have a heavier clutch assembly on the 22B over an STi TypeR which is going to slow the pick up down a little too. There isnt a lot in it though.
I am trying to remember the red line on the 22B, if i recall correctly its a few hundred RPM lower than the 2 litre STi engine, i could be wrong though, its been a while since i drove one in anger.

John,
IIRC, the 22b had the same redline as STI 2litre units.
It's odd that the more oversquare geometry of the 22b engine would cause it to rev less well, that's counter intuitive to me. The humungous flywheel and twin plate clutch mass would certainly reduce the "revability" a fair bit. The standard 22b's pull dropped off at high revs, but I suspect that's more to do with using the same cams/heads, turbo and exhaust as the 2L with the larger capacity engine. The 22b's mean piston speeds at any give rev point will be identical to that of the 2L engines.

Yep. i think you are right on redline. The rest of what you wrote is exactly what i just said, thats why i said all things being equal, i.e the heads, cams, turbo etc. Of course the piston speeds will be identical, its the same stroke as the 2 litre, you still have a bigger mass to move through that stroke and you have more air to pump through the same restrictive inlet/exhaust, so its not going to be as eficient as a percentage of CC. The diferences arnt going to be huge though.
