David,

Try TCDirect look at Mineral Insulated Thermocouples. Also do compression fittings.

One of Julian Edgar's AutoSpeed articles does what Paul mentions with an AD595.

Andrew...

thermocouple from RS for about £13, Ferrule is about £4 and a display with 2 inputs about £50 from maplins.

Would measure 2 with a switch to choose, how does that sound?

Alternatively, thermocouple, all in one thermocouple amp IC, bit of vero board, and a voltmeter, probably set you back not much less than the bought meter from maplin.

The Autometer EGT gauge and probe from Scoobymania was £85 about a year ago, but it measures in degF and only goes to 1600, however autometer may do other ranges...

A company called "Lab facility" also do thermocouples, including custom made ones, I have one welded inside a stainless M6 bolt, and another in a spark gasket.

The maplin thing sounds like the right code, the important thing is CHEAP, not the sort of thing you want on the dash every day.

The SPA adaptor box is a AD595 IC I beleive, but they charge £70
