Off the top of my head,
too high a boost pressure,
too far advanced ignition,
too hot an intake charge,
contaminated intake charge,
badly atomised fuel mixture,
too high a comression ratio, not exactly something that would go wrong with an engine but something to think about when building one !

All those things that Fuzz said. It has an evil effect on your engine too-imagine hitting your piston tops with a lump hammer every time it fires! Definitely worth avoiding at all costs.

i will buy that off you Deanf, my symtoms are that when i put my foot down from start off or low revs it seems though the engine cuts out for a split second, it started to heppen a fair while ago but it seems to have got worse, esspecially when the car has been driven on the motorway!
does any any of this seem familiar to you?

go to power engineering of uxbridge website look at technical stuff and you can find couple of good explanations but basicly the front of your pistons are being burnt buy the ignition of fuel as the piston comes up you can rectifi this by having your ecu remapped costs about 900 quid you get more power to dett is a bad thing so be carefull

I know you already then.
Via Blitzimpreza isn't it ?
Finally got yourself a pc then.
Thoughts on your motor,
Reason for asking if it had regular service was, i thought it might have been something simple like plugs or maybe leads breaking down ?
Duff MAF sensors usually cause a bad / rough idle.
Does it ? ( you didn't mention it!)

If she is hunting at idle, then your probably right in thinking its the MAF. I have the one off my 00MY if it'll fit,
Don't need it any more as I'm running the Link ECU
