Poor Running???

Went to see a mate of mine today to see how his Legacy Rally Car is coming on. Got there to get roped into to working on it. Anyway the problem is the car starts and runs but when you give it some throttle it starts to die let the throttle go and it will tick over fine. The car had a n/s/f impact and broke a cam wheel so sorted that out.
I wondered if it could be the cam sensor?
Anyone else have any ideas?
BTW it's a my92 J plate.
