Oh dear I think it's dead
#1
could somebody please help me here, I was driving down the motor way when the car start to make a very odd noise... you know like when you put cardboard in the spokes of your bike wheels as a kid.
The noise is only there when driving, if the car is/was sat idle the noise would stop.... I have no engine check lights on, and the battery dies shortly afterwards.
I have plenty of oil etc
can anyone shed some light on this please.

It does sound like it could be a big end, but it's hard to say for sure.
It would be worth you checking the oil again, but this time inspect the oil on the dip stick carefully, and see if it has any tiny gold coloured flecks in it.
If it has, this is a good sign that a bearing has gone. To be certain, drain, and inspect the oil. If a bearing has gone, there will be a lot of small gold coloured slithers.
Avoid starting, or driving it, until you have eliminated a bearing failure.
Mark.

Cheers Mark I'll check it all out today, twasa bit cold and dark on the side of the M11 at 1am to check properly LOL
Ah, also, the car idles fine when I'm sat still, it pulls ok...... well, did pull OK untill the battery went dead in about five seconds flat.... I dipped the clutch to see if the noise would carry on when the drive isn't engaged (try and rule out Gearbox etc while rolling) and the car just cut out and then I couldn't start it again. Does this help, would this happen if the big ends had gone ? ?
How much am I looking at if it is the Big end ??
Cheers

Sounds as though you might have had a major electrical short circuit somewhere and you heard some arcing going on. Possibly a serious alternator fault. Impossible to say with out seeing the car of course. Funny that the battery should go flat so quickly.
Hope you get it sorted easily

As Les said, you had a noise with a combination of the flat battery.
Does (imho) seem alternator related.
Is the alternator drive belt intact ?
It could of slipped and not be driving the alternator properly,
in doing so may be contacting with something, hence noise.
Any burning smell ?
I'm not sure which systems are on the same drive belt as the alternator, (if any).So cant say if this would have affected anything else.
I may also be talking total cr@p.
Lets see if anyone else can help
Cheers

Thanks for the advice peoples.
The alternator Belt is still in one piece and all electrics in the car seem to be working, and there was no burning, no engine check lights have come it just stopped, I am soooooooooo confused!!!!
The car will turn over and run for two seconds before stalling itself, it sounds like there is no oil in the engine even tho there is.

from your posts is it possible that it is actually an alternator failure and nothing to do with the engine!! maybe the pulley shaft seizing?? undo belt start and see if any noise........
