I gave my wrx an oil and filter change earlier on using 15W40 SYNTHETIC oil
i used approx 4.5 litres
the engine now has a very worrying knocking noise which to seems to come and go
the engines not been hot yet, should i use thicker oil maybe
any help would be greatly appreciated

it seems weird that the knocking comes and goes,
do you think that thicker oil might cure it or has the damage already been done?
the engine has only done ,28000 miles and ive not had a bit of trouble with it since ive had it

All sorted(thank god!)
Had the car checked today at an engine specialist, and it was me just being paranoid!
the oil i put in yesterday(15w40)was too thick to get to the hydraulic tappets
It was recomended that i give the engine a flush and replace the oil.
the oil i have replaced it with is MILLERS 5W30 SEMI SYNTHETIC, and this seems to have done the trick(KEEPING EVERYTHING CROSSED!!)

Thanks again for all the info-
-Panic over-hopefully!!!

I agree with Soobyboy 10w40 30 grade is not liked for high speed sustained driving.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like one of those **** or bust situations, what if the engine picked up a shell bearing when you first started it after changing the filter. Did you fill the filter with oil before you fitted it? As the bearings will not have any oil pressure for a few seconds after initial start up if you fitted it empty. If it has picked up a bearing it will get worse quite quick. If it is the above, you should be able to hear it from the centre area of the engine, if its on either side of the engine it could be a cam follower. it should also sound worse when its hot as the clearances expand with temp.
Edited to say that if the "pump is stuck" This can be the pumps valve which can stick in its bore, if this happens you will loose oil pressure, instead of stripping the front of the engine to get to it, you could get somone to rig up a pressure gauge to check the pressure first (port is under the alternator). No oil pressure= nakered engine, but in this condition it wouldnt run for very long until it seizes ie, a min or two.
