I have read the old threads on ECU reset by connecting/disconnecting wires located under steering column, but won't it reset by just disconnecting battery for an hour?

Very briefly..
1: On early cars they retard the ignition timing when knock detected and take a long time to advance it.
Newer cars are better and advance it pretty much as quickly as they retard it. So if you happen to get a bad batch of fuel and the timing is retarded due to this the early cars will take tank after tank full of good fuel to advance again.
Often feel a slight power increase after a reset as it returns the timing to base values.
2: on the newer cars the MAF sensor is more fragile and the ECU seems to compensate for a failing MAF sensor but eventually it cannot compensate enough and you run the car lean (bad).
If you reset the ecu and all of a sudden it runs rough then likely you had a MAF problem. Replace MAF and all is good again (original power back)
All this is just stuff I have picked up off here and experiances with the older car.
I have wired the plugs on mine to switches and reset the ecu periodically and after and mods..
