Just moved my knock link sensor (as I wasnt sure I had it in the right place - it was on the "red" part of the engine in an STi 5) I have now moved it onto the intercooler bracket i.e. replaced one of the bolts with a longer one, threaded through the knock link and then the braket, then the block (as that was a central part of the engine), is this OK, as I am not sure if the bracket will mask det (if there is any)

Thumbs up

You shouldn't have to put it through the intercooler bracket, remove the intercooler, leaving the brackets inplace. There should be a m6 hole on the top of the cylender block (passenger side, very near the bell housing).

You will not detect knock if the sensor is on the inlet manifold....

Dan, I wanted the sensor as close to the centre as I could get it, and I seem to recall that others have it on the bracket as well? Do you know if having it on the bracket will make it less sensitive? The hole you are talking about has an earth for something in my car (couldn't be bothered to trace wire to find out what for, although, if undone, and then re-connected muchos whirring can be heard - could possibly be the IC water spray?)

Having it on the bracket is going to be the equvialent of trying to hear a conversation through a closed door. It'll probably hear "something", but to be sure I would try and get it on the block.

The hole I described is empty on my car (sti3) I thought it would be the same on yours..... its not "just" an STI5 then?

On the contrary, it is less of an STi V, less doors, less weight, less cogs on the gears

Wrexy, the image shown is where the earth type cable is (i am not sure if it is an earth cable, I will need to test with a multimeter, but being as assumption is the mother of all doodahs!)

The location shown is under the intercooler. You are looking at it standing at the side of the car from the passenger side, (ie for the UK). To the right of the bolt where the sensor goes is an earth strap. To see this location properly, you need to remove the intercooler.

Cheers,

George.
