Induction Kit, worth getting?
#1
Is it worth getting an Induction kit for a MY02 STI? does airbox etc come out easily and are they easy to fit (Mechanical novice here) would the car need tuning afterwards. any idea's on what to go for, K&N perhaps?

You'd be better off getting a panel filter unless youve got a box full of spare MAF sensors! The gains of induction kits on these are small, if you get one, the K&N is the safest, probebly blow your warranty though!
Edited to say
unless youve got a LAAAAAAAARGE turbo and FMIC!

Im just going on the side of safety, i thought about one once but alot of people have had MAF sensors fail because of extra vibration incured by the induction kit, ive even heard of people fitting a knew MAF only for it to fail again after only a couple of months. Its also tricky to get a good enough cold air feed to the kit, if it starts sucking to much warm air from the engine bay, it will lose power with a Ind kit. Also, if your cars a U.K which im guessing it is, the fueling is set up on the 'tight' side, so theres a slight chance you could get dettonation too.
I have heard people use them with no probs also, but its a dodgy area! Try a thread search on the subject and see what you reckon.

May i suggest you do a search on ind kits. There have been some problems with MAF's on MY99/00 cars not heard of many on other years.
I had an ind kit on an MY99 for 46K miles without a hitch!
The important thing is to buy a good quality filter with good/high filtration to keep the cr@p out.
someone does a kit which they guarantee the MAF with, again a search may help
not sure on the gains of a panel - if any
Ind kit in conjuction with a good quality high/flow b/box i had changed at the same time made all the difference to the car, mostly made it rev hard to the red line in each gear, it used to be a bit 'astmatic' in 3-5th.
I would not discount it just on the one negative comment.

i have a MY02 and have fitted a quikshift ind kit to it found the fitting easy, also not really a problem to run the ducting , you can keep the OE air box to bung on for services , trips to the dealer ect.
makes the engine sound better/differant (in my opinon).
as for power gain 3-5bhp .
you could get an enclosed kit like the viper but a bit pricey.
have seen a scooby with the cone filter stuck through the front side wing and sealed so no need for cold air ducting, looked quite good

Spanner76, your Quikshift filter is a stainless steel mesh one I take? I used to have a Blitz SUS and they have the worst filtration of all filters. Changed it to a Blitz LM filter but after blowing 2 MAF's in 4 weeks have replaced the original airbox with a K&N panel filter.(V5 STi Type R)
After taking the Blitz off, gave the induction intake a wipe and found it full of filth

take a look at the pipercross viper, it draws air in the same way the regular airbox does, meant to be good power gains too - personally I wouldnt want my engine sucking in hot enginey air - a panel filter such as the itg is an easy option, Ive ran one for 25k miles, no worries!

all im gona say is max power once did a test on civic vtec with performance induction kit and a replacement panel filter, the induction kit came off worse although it sounded better.the japs have got induction sorted unless youve got big turbo's etc

I have heard this to be so from a few people, particularly the hks model. I also plugged the dump valve for some good noises just the week before thought this may have aided the process. Thought i'd blown up the turbo when it happened(120 in 4th, no comments pls i know the relationship between scoobs and speed!).
As a result i'll just have to bulk order MAF sensors!

Tobyscooby, who the **** told you that jap cars dont respond well to induction filters? Who said that the japs have induction sorted? Max power tests mean **** all! I have seen a civic type r gain 14 bhp with a quikshift racing induction kit! If you dont believe me ask any honda forum.
