I've finally got fed-up with an intermittant fault, and want to change the coolant temp sensor for the ECU (93 WRX).

I've managed to locate the sensor, which is on the top of the engine, under the inlet manifold.

Can I change the sensor without having to drain the coolant (was thinking of syphoning off coolant from the header tank)
The sensor is typically awkward to get to...any hints on how to remove it?

Cheers

Obviously something that few people have had cause to look at?

I'll assume a 'yes' and a 'no' to the Qs above then......unless someone knows different?

Afternoon to you mate - I changed the coolant temp sensor on MY93 WRX last year. You are quite correct in your assumption that it is a b1tch to do (have a scar to prove it). I didn't drain any coolant from the system at all and unfortunately found out the hard way...... removed the old temp sensor and glug glug out poured the coolant couldn't stop the stuff and couldn't get the replacement sensor in place due to the fluid pumping out of the hole and the sensor being in a tricky place.

If you are not going to syphon off the coolant then be prepared to have to put some coolant back in. Hope this helps...btw what is the intermitent problem you are talking about ??

Good luck

Not worth tryin TBH, it will seal better if the threads are dry, plus when you refill you will have more chance of checking for leaks as there will be less water present on the block.

Buy two inlet manifold gaskets, remove manifold... it can be done without removing manifold but saves a lot of time and hassle if you just take it off. it may seem a lot of hassle but makes life much much easier.

Thumbs up

Fairly straightforward - IMHO. I removed the drivebelt and spun the alternator out of the way to provide easy access.
