Newbie Style Dense question, but could somebody please explain BOCU devices to me? I am at a loos to even understand the concept: as far as I can work out, it's a flap that blows open to...do what?

Sorry to seem thick here, but I don't even know what BOCU stands for, so can't put together a decent search?

whatever could a BOCU do?

It's effects depend on whether you measure with US standard HP or UK standard HP.

The Pop off valve vents excess charge air before the throttle plate in order to boost limit pressure. This is rather like the pressure control valve in a steam pressure cooker, it lets the intake pressure build up to a preset level and then vents any excess charge to maintain this maximum pressure limit.

Such a valve can be used as a more direct boost control method than the more conventional use of exhaust bypass "wastegate" valves.
