Unhappy

After running hard on track for about 15 mins, I noticed a lack of power in the mid to high rev range in higher gears. Is this likely to just be due to the intercooler getting too warm from running on track or any other ideas. The car seemed OK on the way home, though of course could not really open it up to the same extent. Car is a MY00 with TEK2 and Magnex centre & back box.
Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?

Thumbs up

Was yours the black scooby with gold wheels if so we were at tower corner and as you began to slow down you were you were smoking a bit off power (black smoke) so i think you were over fueling for some reason possibly heat, hope this helps and all is ok.

Sounds like Heatsoak on the I/C to me.

Cool

sounds exactly what i'm getting with my standard intercooler. Running quite a few mods and the car is sharp as you like until a bit of prolonged hard driving

Was hoping it might just be the I/C, rather than anything more drastic. I dont suppose there is much to be done about it then? Save for going for a FMIC which is too expensive for me !

I was annoyed cos it allowed someone to pass me on my last lap

I always seem to notice a slight loss in mid to top end power whenever mine has been running for ages or driven hard, been told its the intercooler getting too warm..
I'll have to try to save a grand for a FMIC..

Looked good out there on the track Jim, you were acually giving it some unlike loads of others i saw.

How did the standard brakes cope with the track? the only thing putting me off taking mine on the track is the massive brake fade i seem to get after pushing the car for a time.. dont fancy mine ending up like the silver EVO!!

i noticed my times were consitently coming down slightly after my 27 runs at elvington, which i pretty much did back to back, then it rained and it made my intercooler nice and wet and the times dropped again

was definatly noticible, i am considering either a intercooler splitter or a water spray system

anybody ever tried both? which gives the better results, ovb the splitter is a lot less work but which gives beter results in the real world??

Agree - a water spray is a good idea. There are a number of kits available these days...

Unless you are going to spend a lot of time on track, the cost, IMHO, for an FMIC is a bit rich (Evos run sprays on their FMICs these days too).

On track - even with a very large uprated TMIC I got quite bad heatsoak even with water spray.

Finally converted me to FMIC!

As Rannoch, waterspray is nice but like pi**ing on a very large bonfire indeed on track. 15 minutes is enough to start doing a fry up on the intercooler.

i am not that intrested in a fmic yet/ if ever @ all

i do like the idea of spray, but the splitter seams cheap easy and a dam good idea, dont subaru now fit them to the new models?

In reply to Ali, the brakes stood up well ( 4 pots on mine of course ). Needed new pads afterwards, but I knew they were getting towards the end of their life anyway. Just put some Ferodos on this time to see what they are like.

So it seems there is no cheap cure to this heatsoak then.. Shame the Mk3 doesnt have a standard FMIC really !!

You can shim the back edge of the I/C, so that it is tilted forwards. This is supposed to provide a bit better airflow over it.
