Advise on revs not dropping
#1
Hi,
I have just bought a new MY03 WRX. I am currently running in and have done about 500miles. I have so far not gone past 3000 rpm.
I have noticed a strange problem which I wondered if anyone else has experienced??
When changing gear from 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th under moderate acceleration, when I depress the clutch to change up, the revs shoot up 300-500 rpm (say 500 on half throttle) even though my foot is completely off the accelerator.
I spoke to the salesman and he said it was just the electronics and should sort itself out.
Does this sound right? Has anyone else had a similar problems. It only seems to do this in the gears mentioned above.
I would appreciate any advise.
Thanks
LCJ

I know what you mean; my MY03 with 1000 on the clock does that.
I Put it down to my bad gear change, and not lifting my right foot away early enough for the change up.
Maybe the turbo is taking over and pulling the revs up a little.
Not the biggest problem in the world, hope you don’t mind me saying you may be looking for problems.
You just can’t believe the car is so good, almost too good to be true

3,000 revs? I've been trying to stay below 4,000 (also a new MY03 - 1k due Sat 17th....). I've noticed this with the rev reading too - although the engine doesn't seem to particularly speed up. Could it be an incorrect reading? - that's what I'd been hoping... Also, does it matter if the engine's not actually doing any work at that moment?

I thought running in, is not going over 5000 and varied speeds
Too much is made of all this running in stuff.
Modern engines don’t need it the same way as the old days; Oils are better and thinner reflected in the 3000 mile first service for euro models.
People worry too much
Have fun!

I have noticed this on my other half's 03 WRX and the dealer said to her they couldn't find a fault. I just thought it was the usual BS you get from them, and told her to take it back to them but she has had enough with them. I have an STi8 and it doesn't do it on mine, so could be a fault and by the looks of it the 03 WRX is the victim.

3000 miles Ajax? Mine was 1000 on a Euro MY02.... It's 'cos they use special thin running in oil. That's why you shouldn't exceed 4000 rpm.

Mine is going in for its 1000m service to the dealer on the 31st.
I will mention it to the service department to see if they can check the ECU.
Hopefully nothing to worry about. Just don't want it to jump into the rev limiter when its run in and I am able to go to the red!
It would be interesting to know if any dealers recognise this as a problem.

Yep 3000 for the first service, it’s the new Euro servicing schedule for MY03's
I think the oils these days are so good they don’t need all the changing that used to go on years ago.
As for the engine swarf and muck are not an issue these days.
IM must know what they are doing, after all they built my pride and joy

LCJ - mine does this too....then again my integrale did a similar thing. It seems to happen if you change gear just as the turbo starts to spool up. When the turbo starts to spin the power output has to turn a 4wd system, then when you depress the clutch to change up a gear you are effectively taking away that 4wd resistance, add in the boost pressure that is now running through the engine/turbo and i think that is why the engine keeps reving a little.
A bad explanation but I know what i mean even if no-one else does !
One other thing, i wouldnt drive your car in such a short rev band (0-3000 rpm) for a 1000 miles. Best case scenario is to gradually add in more revs to your driving as you put the miles on, ie: 1st 200 miles stick limit it to 3000 rpm and then 200-600 miles 3500 rpm then 600-800 miles 4000rpm, 800-1000 miles 4500rpm and so on. Also worth mentioning is that once you break the 1000 mile running in period dont go redlinning it everywhere, wait until you've got a couple of thousand miles on the clock b4 you really start driving the car to within an inch of its life.
Saying all this, mines got 750 on the clock and i took her round to 5k revs......not a bad thing now and again ! (she better get used to it too.....)
